Birthday Reminders on Facebook: How They Work (and Where They Fall Short)

Facebook birthday reminders are useful for knowing. Less useful for doing anything about it.

Facebook has had a birthday reminder feature for years and it remains one of the most widely used birthday notification systems in Australia. If you have friends on Facebook with their birthday listed, you will see reminders in your notifications and in the Events section of the app. It requires no setup on your part beyond having the app installed.

This guide covers how Facebook birthday reminders work, how to get the most out of them, and why most people who rely on them still find themselves scrambling when a birthday actually arrives.

How Facebook birthday reminders work

Facebook notifies you of upcoming friends' birthdays in two ways.

The first is through the Events section of the Facebook app. Tap the menu icon, select Events, and you will see a "Birthdays" section showing friends with birthdays in the next week. Facebook typically surfaces these a day or two before the date.

The second is through push notifications. If you have notifications enabled for Facebook, you will receive an alert on the day of a friend's birthday. The notification usually arrives in the morning and links directly to their profile so you can post on their timeline.

You can also find upcoming birthdays by going to facebook.com/events/birthdays in a browser, which shows a calendar view of friends' birthdays for the coming weeks.

What Facebook birthday reminders do well

For casual acquaintances and social connections, Facebook birthday reminders are genuinely useful. They surface dates you would not otherwise track, and they make the action obvious: visit their profile and post a message. For a large social network where you want to acknowledge birthdays without deep personal investment in each one, the system works well.

The reach is also significant. Facebook's birthday data covers your entire friends list, including people whose birthdays you would not otherwise have stored anywhere.

The three things Facebook birthday reminders cannot solve

The timing problem. Facebook notifies you on the day or at most a day or two before. For anyone you actually care about: close friends, family members, people whose birthday warrants more than a wall post. this gives you no meaningful lead time. Australian delivery takes three to five business days. Same-day options are limited to whatever is available near you. A notification on the morning of a birthday is too late for a considered gift.

The knowledge problem. Facebook knows your friends' birthdays. It does not know what they are interested in, what they would actually want to receive, your budget, what you gave them last year, or any of the context that makes a gift meaningful rather than generic. Every year you have the date and nothing else to work with.

The relationship problem. Facebook treats all birthdays the same. The reminder for your closest friend looks identical to the reminder for a workmate you met at a conference three years ago. The people whose birthdays genuinely matter to you deserve a different level of attention than the Facebook reminder system provides.

What to do about the people whose birthdays actually matter

For birthdays where a wall post is the right response, Facebook handles this well. Keep using it for that.

For birthdays where you want to give a considered gift, you need a system with more lead time and more information than Facebook can provide.

Birthday Backup sends tailored gift recommendations fourteen days before each birthday. Enough time for Australian delivery and enough time to make a considered decision. You provide the context Facebook doesn't have: their interests, their style, your budget. The recommendations reflect who the person actually is rather than who people in their age bracket tend to be.

No app to download. No password to create. Works in any browser on any device. Free for up to 5 people.
